[:nl]Let Us Change werd in 2009 opgericht door Johan Vandenbossche en Aynalem w/ Emanuel. Het begon allemaal met één jongetje dat noodgedwongen op straat leefde. In december 2008 besloten Aynalem en Johan dat ze voor hem zouden zorgen. Aynalem nam hem in huis en Johan beloofde dat ze zich geen financiële zorgen zouden moeten maken. Zo ontstond het idee om een opvangtehuis voor straatkinderen te starten.[:en]Let Us Change was founded at the beginning of 2009 by Johan Vandenbossche and Aynalem w/ Emanuel. It all started with one boy who lived on the streets and had no other options. In December 2008 Aynalem, a retired teacher, and Johan, who was in Ethiopia for his master thesis as a journalist met each other, and later they met N, a small boy living on the street. They promised each other to take care of him. N. would be living with Aynalem, and Johan would make sure that Aynalem would always be able to take care of the boy. The idea of Let Us Change was born.[:]

[:nl]Al snel werd duidelijk dat het niet bij één kindje zou blijven. Er waren nog zo veel straatkinderen die dringend hulp nodig hadden. Johan en Aynalem besloten nog twee jongens te helpen. De drie kinderen leefden samen bij Aynalem waar ze onderdak, eten en veel liefde kregen. Ze gingen ook naar een goede school in de buurt. Ondertussen werd de lokale ngo ‘Let Us Change Ethiopia’ opgestart en zocht Johan sponsors in België voor de grote droom: een opvangtehuis voor twintig straatkinderen.[:en] It soon became clear that it wouldn’t stop with one child. There were still so many in the same situation. Two boys joined quickly afterwards. They cosily lived together in Aynalem’s house where they received shelter, food and above all: love. The three of them were sent to school. Meanwhile the local NGO ‘Let Us Change Ethiopia’ was founded and Johan started searching for sponsors in Belgium for the big dream: a home for 20 street children. [:]

[:nl]Na lang zoeken vonden Aynalem en Johan een geschikt en betaalbaar huurhuisje: 3 kamers, een badkamer en een keukentje. Een klein paradijs als het ware. Quasi onmiddellijk vervoegden negen extra kinderen de LUC-familie, allen weggeplukt van rond de kerk, waar het gros van de bedelaars vertoeft. Er werd personeel aangenomen om voor de kinderen te zorgen, ook zij leefden daarvoor als bedelaars.[:en] Finally a suitable and affordable house was found: 3 rooms, a bathroom and a small kitchen. Our own small paradise. Nine sero-negative (!) children joined the LUC-family almost immediately. They were all found near the church spire, where the greatest part of the beggars live. Personnel was also hired to take care of the children, carefully picked out at the same place… [:]

[:nl]De negen nieuwe kindjes gingen er tijdens hun eerste weken bij Let Us Change zienderogen op vooruit. Na enkele maanden kon er echt van een metamorfose gesproken worden, zowel op lichamelijk als op mentaal vlak. Ondertussen werden de eerste huisjes voor enkele ouders van de twaalf kindjes, alsook sommige andere extreem arme gezinnen gehuurd. Voor zij die capabel waren werd een geschikte job gezocht, de kinderen werden naar school gestuurd.[:en]The nine newcomers visibly progressed rapidly in their first weeks. At the end of March, one could really notice a metamorphosis had taken place, physically as well as mentally. Meanwhile the first small houses for some parents of the 12 children were rented, as well as for some other extremely poor families. Those who were capable, were helped in finding a job and the children were sent to school. [:]

[:nl]In september 2010 startte Let Us Change met het betalen van schoolkosten voor twintig kinderen die in de gevangenis van Dilla (een stadje ten zuiden van Hawassa) wonen omdat hun moeder een misdaad begaan heeft. Het kost veertien euro per kind per jaar om het weerbaar te maken en te onderwijzen.[:en]In 2010 LUC started paying the educational costs of 20 children stuck in a prison in Dilla, a city south of Hawassa. They were imprisoned because of crimes their mothers committed. It only costs 14 euro per child per year to provide education, so they have a fair chance when they become adult and may leave prison.[:]

[:nl]In 2011 werden alle geboortecertificaten voor onze 19 kindjes in orde gebracht. 19 ondertussen want er kwamen vier nieuwe meisjes bij. De kinderen scoorden ondertussen goede punten op school en waren al helemaal aangepast aan het leven bij Let Us Change. Ook het aantal huisjes dat we in Hawassa huren voor arme gezinnen bleef opgelopen. In 2011 waren er veertig huisjes voor ongeveer 130 mensen. De meeste volwassenen onder hen vonden een job.[:en]The birth certificates for our 19 children are all taken care of. 19, since 4 additional girls recently joined. Two of the LUC-children had such good school results they were allowed to skip a year, the others also did very well. The number of small houses we rent in Hawassa for poor families increased to 40, bringing the number of aided people to around 130. Most of the adults in this group finally found a job.[:]

[:nl]Meer dan tien vrijwilligers uit vijf verschillende landen bezochten Let Us Change in de zomer van 2012. Ze knapten onder meer het huisje op en speelden met de kindjes die wederom allen prima resultaten behaalden op school.[:en]More than 10 volunteers from 5 different countries visited LUC during the summer of 2012. They refreshed the house and played with the children, who once again had fine results at school.[:]

[:nl]Een sponsor verzekerde ons budget voor een tweede huis. Prompt namen we maar liefst 15 nieuwe kinderen op. Dat bracht de teller op 34 kindjes. Wachten kon niet langer, de nood was te hoog. Wederom een grote stap.[:en] A sponsor assured us they would provide budget for a second house. Promptly no less than 15 new children were included in the current house, which brought the total of children to 34. We couldn’t wait any longer, the need was too high. Again a big step. And at least equally important: all of them (newcomers as well as veterans) sero-negative! [:]

Let Us Change II

[:nl]We hebben er lang op gewacht, maar in 2013 kwam er eindelijk een tweede huis. Een prachtig huis met een mooie tuin in een rustige buurt en dicht bij ons eerste huis. Het werd het meisjeshuis, de plek waar onze meisjes en de kleine kindjes in alle rust en comfort kunnen opgroeien. Ook hebben we vanaf nu onze eigen Bajaj. Dankzij die tuktuk kunnen we gaan en staan waar we willen. Het is echt een prachtdingetje. It’s a beautiful house with a nice garden in a quiet neighbourhood, nearby our first home. It will be the place where our girls and youngsters will grow up happily. We also have our own Bajaj now, a fantastic thing. It allows us to go where and when we want.[:]

Exponentiële groei Exponential growth

Een nieuw jaar, een nieuw groeimoment. Tijdens het laatste kwartaal van 2013 kwamen er nog meer dan twintig kinderen bij, wat het totaal op 56 bracht. Dankzij de extra capaciteit van het tweede huis konden we deze stap zetten. Ook begonnen we een boompjes-project om bomen in Hawassa te planten. Daarnaast werd een partnerorganisatie in Nederland opgericht door enkele gemotiveerde vrijwilligers: Stichting Let Us Change. A new year, a new moment of growth. During the last quarter of 2013, more than 20 new children joined, bringing the total up to 56. We were able to do this thanks to the extra capacity delivered by the second house. Additionally, a new Trees-project was founded in Ethiopia, as well as a partner organisation in The Netherlands (Stichting Let Us Change). Things are moving fast.

Let Us Change III

[:nl]Exact een jaar na het huren van een tweede huis openden we een derde. Omwille van de wel zeer snelle groei in aantal kinderen werden de twee bestaande huizen al snel te druk voor de allerkleinsten. Onze negen peutertjes werden ondergebracht in een derde tehuis, het ‘babyhuis’. Ze krijgen er meer rust en aangepaste zorg. Opnieuw een (grote) stap in de goede richting![:en] Exactly one year after we rented a second house, we now open our third house. Due to the very steep growth in numbers of children, the second house quickly became too busy for the little ones. These 9 youngsters have now been moved to a third house, where they have a more quiet environment to grow up and adapted care can be given. Another (great) step forward! [:]

Empower Ethiopia

[:nl]In 2015 startte Let Us Change de samenwerking met Empower Ethiopia, een Amerikaanse partner. Net zoals de Belgische vzw Let Us Change biedt Empower Ethiopia financiële steun aan de ngo in Ethiopië. [:en]In 2015 Let Us Change started the collaboration with Empower Ethiopia, an American partner. Just like the Belgian vzw Let Us Change, Empower Ethiopia offers financial support to the NGO in Ethiopia.[:]

[:nl]We hebben opnieuw enkele kinderen mogen verwelkomen in onze tehuizen. De Ethiopische overheid werkt hard om straatkinderen terug te linken met hun familie, daarom bieden we ook af en toe tijdelijk opvang aan.[:en]Not only these cuties came to live in the Let Us Change house. We also offer a temporary home to children who lived on the street while their parents are living on the coutnryside. The government is working hard to link these children back to their family. But this brother and siter will stay forever with us![:]

[:nl]In maart 2018 opende Let Us Change een vierde huis. Dat huis werd het nieuwe ‘boyshouse’. De oudste jongens van Let Us Change verhuisden naar de nieuwe plek en het oude jongenshuis (het eerste huis van LUC) werd omgetoverd tot werkplek. Op die werkplek wordt voornamelijk gekookt en gewassen. Zo hebben de kinderen in de andere huizen meer ruimte om te spelen.[:en]In March 2018 Let Us Change opened a fourth house. That house became the new ‘boyshouse’. The oldest boys of Let Us Change moved to the new place and the old boyshouse (the first house of LUC) was transformed into a workplace. Mainly cooking and washing happens in this workplace. This way the children in the other houses have more room to play.[:]
